Something About Real Lady Pirates
Many people are unaware that there were real live women who were pirates! Probably the most notable names in pirate history are Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Women today might think that this was not too big of a deal as we have women who serve in just about any occupation that a man occupies. However, back in the time of pirates, that was an entirely a different world.
During the main time of piracy, from which the Pirates of the Caribbean is famous, runs from about the early 1500s to as late as the 1870s. However, piracy in general probably existed from the earliest times of sea travel.
Some of the early 16th century lady pirates were Gráinne Ní Mháille, an Irish woman who went by the name of Grace O’Malley. She was an active pirate around 1560, and she captained three ships and had 200 male pirates underneath her flag.
Another lady pirate about the same time of Grace, was Jacquotte Delahaye. I particularly like her nickname: “Back from the dead Red.” She earned this moniker because she had faked her own death. Later, when she reappeared in pirate circles, she was given her nickname because of her striking red hair.
Anne Bonny and Mary Read were 18th century pirates, with Anne’s active piracy was somewhere between 1719 to 1720. Mary Read was active from 1718 to 1720. The two actually knew each other, and the story is that they became very close friends.
Of course we don’t know what kind of boots these lady pirates wore from the 15th to 18th centuries, but Hollywood helps us with that, even though they’ve been known to be way off course when it comes to Hollywood getting the appropriate attire for the time period.
In any event, enjoy your own stylish Women’s Pirate Boots and in particular, these dazzling Anna Boots! If this does not quite fit the style for your costume or outfit, you can return to the home page to look for more amazing costume boots.
